I Want To...

I was watching Project Hail Mary with my younger sibling today, for the second time. I love the movie. For me, it’s a great reminder of how important good stories are.

I envy the craft of good storytelling, world building and moving someone’s imagination. I try to do a little of that with my own writing.

As I go about my day, I constantly stumble into things that make me want to create.

I watch a movie and I want to write a screenplay.

I listen to music and I want to sing more.

I read poetry and I want to think of my muse and write a few words of my own.

I drink a great cup of coffee and suddenly I want to learn how to brew it myself.

If you’re anything like me, your days are filled with these little I want tos.

I’ve heard friends confess theirs too occasionally. Someone wants to get better at music. Someone wants to write code. Someone wants to start a business. Someone just wants to just… go to bed on time.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve learned to treat this feeling as a problem.

But I think I’d rather see it differently.

I hope I always have a long list of I want tos.

I hope I never reach a point where nothing excites me enough to make the list.

A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to learn electric guitar. So I bought one, and now I practice every day. Today, I learned the G chord.

Tomorrow, it might be something else.

It’s waking up each day with more things you want to do than you possibly can.

I’d rather live with that abundance than with the absence of wanting anything at all.
